Gluttony – The “Accepted” Sin
As an adult gluttony is obviously something that I battle with. I mean, you don’t make it all the way to 227 at 5’2″, with out having a food problem.
Recently I have been trying very hard to work on my short comings – sins – that I struggle with. I’ve been working on my walk with God, being a better wife and mother and trying to lose weight. Last year I read through the devotional Made to Crave by Lysa Terkeurst (if you haven’t read this devotional yet you so need to – I highly recommend it). In her devotional Lysa talks about shifting your food cravings to God Cravings.
God made us capable of craving so we’d have an unquenchable desire for more of Him, and Him alone. Nothing changes until we make the choice to redirect our misguided cravings to the only one capable of satisfying them.”
This got me thinking – being over weight “gluttonous” has some how become the sin no one wants to notice let alone talk about – the “accepted” sin. But, when you look it up, the Bible really doesn’t mix words about how The Lord feels about Gluttony.
Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. {Philippians 3:19}
When I read these words (and as I am writing them again here) I am sad and upset with my own actions. I know my eating habits and lack of exercise are bad for my health but I had really never looked at it as a Spiritual battle.
They Tested God in their heart by demanding the food they crave. {Psalm 78:18}
That is exactly what I am doing! By eating my way through a bag of chips when I’m stressed – I’m stepping away from God when I should be running to Him.
Do you not know that you are God’s and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. {1 Corinthians 3:16-17}
As Christians we need to stop ignoring this sin in our lives. We need to stop accepting it as just a health issue or pride and see it as the spiritual battle that it is. If you are truly serious about your walk with God and growing closer to Him – then it’s time to take action! Look at your body as God’s temple – Treat your body as God’s temple – Respect your body as God’s temple!
Would you trash your church?
How would you feel towards some one who did?
God gave us these bodies to take care of and allow His Spirit to dwell in. I don’t know about you, but I want to stop this cycle and honor God by honoring my body – HIS TEMPLE!
